MAME stands for Multiple Arcade Machine Emulator. When used in conjunction with images of the original arcade game's ROM and disk data, MAME attempts to reproduce that game as faithfully as possible on a more modern general-purpose computer. MAME can currently emulate several thousand different classic arcade video games from the late 1970s through the modern era. CPS2 MAME ROMs packed for previous versions do not have that file, which is why they recently stopped working. The easiest way to fix this would be to download a new version of the ROM set that has been packaged more recently. Manually repackaging them is an option too if you need to save bandwidth although I'm not sure if the.key files are available on their own anywhere. The relevant files are called avsp.key for the main set, and the clones sets each have their own key like avspu.key for the US specific ROM set. They move the decryption keys from being embedded within MAME to being actual rom files now that the format which the data is stored within the chip is understood. ![]() ![]() In terms of end user experience it makes no differnece, in terms of people wanting to repair / reprogram dead CPS2 boards it means that previously unusable / dead hardware can now be used again with the correct hardware and correct key files. It's one of those times you have to appreciate that the primary goal of MAME is not to play emulated games, but to help people with the original hardware in any way that we can. ![]() All Consoles • 3DO • Atari 2600 • Atari 5200 • Atari 7800 • Atari Jaguar • Atari Lynx • Coleco Colecovision • Dreamcast • Game Gear • Gameboy / Color • Gameboy Advance • GameCube • GCE Vectrex • MAME • Mattel Intellivision • Memotech MTX512 • MGT Sam Coupe • MSX1 • MSX2 • Neo Geo • Neo Geo CD • Neo Geo Pocket • Nintendo • Nintendo 64 • Nintendo DS • PC-Engine • PlayStation • PlayStation 2 • PSP • Sega CD • Sega Genesis • Sega Master System • Sega Saturn • Super Nintendo • TurboGrafx-16 • WonderSwan / Color Search.
